I'm working hard to create a safe environment where you can relax and get the full benefit from your treatment. please note that:
- I'm continuing to follow advice on reducing the risk of transmission of coronavirus but I cannot totally eliminate the risk
- If you are experiencing any cold or flu type symptoms or have tested positive for covid 19 then please get in touch to rearrange your appointment
- Face coverings are now optional. Please let me know if you would like me to wear a face mask
- Between clients all surfaces are cleaned; all face covers, blankets and towels are changed; and the room is ventilated
What is a session like?
The first session starts with a chat about your general health and what you would like to get from your shiatsu – this helps me to tailor the session to your specific needs. Subsequent sessions will start with a catch-up on how you are. I will use a mix of gentle holding, comfortable pressure, stretches and mobilisations designed to relax, stimulate and re-balance as appropriate for you. You should feel relaxed and comfortable throughout. A session lasts for about an hour, with approximately 50 minutes of hands on time plus a short catch-up and arrival and departure. The first session may take a little bit longer.
How should I prepare for a session?
You will remain fully clothed during the treatment, so please wear or bring comfortable clothing which will not restrict your movement e.g. sweatshirt, tracksuit trousers and socks. Long sleeves and trousers allow me to work most effectively.
It’s best to leave some time between eating and having a Shiatsu treatment, and avoid alcohol both before and after your session.
What about afterwards?
To get the most benefit from your treatment, keep hydrated and if possible allow yourself time to rest and relax afterwards. This will help smooth the flow of changes through your system. It's good to bring a bottle of water with you.
What if I need to rearrange or cancel my appointment?
Please get in touch as soon as you can and at least 24 hours before your appointment. I do need to charge for appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.
What does it feel like?
It feels good! During the session you should feel relaxed and comfortable. You may feel your body responding by gently moving, opening, and releasing and you may feel your breathing change and deep breaths coming into your body.
Afterwards…. People experience the treatment in different ways. Often people feel deeply relaxed, with a sense of well-being and calmness. You may also feel intensely alive and energised. Sometimes emotional feelings surface, either during or after a treatment - this is perfectly normal and you should try to give yourself the time and space to allow them, rather than suppressing them. Sometimes there is some transitory achiness as weak muscles come back into use.
What conditions is Shiatsu good for?
Shiatsu is a safe and gentle therapy which works on both a physical and emotional level so can help with a wide range of conditions - from specific injuries and health issues to more general symptoms of stress and poor health. Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience and regular Shiatsu sessions help to prevent the build-up of stress in our daily lives. Please get in touch if you would like further information about how shiatsu might help with your specific circumstances.
What about Pregnancy?
Shiatsu is safe and supportive during and after pregnancy. I work with women during their 2nd and 3rd trimesters. I have a special 'body cushion' which is comfortable, supportive and adaptable for you and your bump to lie on.
Are there any times when Shiatsu should be avoided?
Shiatsu is a very safe therapy but it should be avoided if you:
How many sessions will I need and how often should I come?
There are no rules. I have clients that come weekly, fortnightly, 3-weekly, monthly or as-and-when – whatever works for you and your life. That said, if you have a specific problem you want help with, I will usually suggest that you start with a series of regular sessions, and then review progress.
